In our Live West Housing community, we find ourselves battling an unexpected enemy – Glyphosate. This chemical is being used on the paths surrounding our homes, endangering the delicate balance of our local ecosystem. Butterflies, bees, bats, and hedgehogs are essential contributors to our environment, playing vital roles in pollination and pest control, yet they are being thrown into jeopardy due to the persistent application of Glyphosate.

Our children play and our beloved pets roam these very paths, making this a deeply personal issue. Glyphosate is not just a threat to the animals and insects that contribute to our ecosystem; it poses potential health risks to the residents of our community, especially the young and the vulnerable. Many councils have already taken the progressive step of banning Glyphosate due to these concerns, realizing the value of protecting both biodiversity and public health.

We are not alone in our concern. Studies have consistently shown the detrimental effects of Glyphosate on wildlife and its potential to disrupt natural habitats. A 2015 study conducted by the World Health Organization classified Glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic in humans," which further highlights the need for it to be restricted particularly in residential areas.

While we recognize the intention might be to maintain our paths, we believe there are safer alternatives available. Ecological methods such as mechanical weeding or the use of organic herbicides can keep our walkways in good condition without the environmental and health risks associated with Glyphosate.

We urge Live West Housing Association to reassess their maintenance practices and consider the well-being of their residents along with the integrity of our local ecosystem. By joining hands in this endeavor, we can ensure a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment for everyone who calls the Live West community their home.
