Ban gas-powered leaf blowers from Toronto

Ban gas-powered leaf blowers from Toronto
The Issue
Living in Toronto, the soothing sounds of nature are a cherished part of daily life. However, the widespread use of gas-powered leaf blowers is disrupting not only the peace of our neighbourhoods, but also the well-being of the wildlife and birds that call this city home. These machines generate excessive noise and release harmful pollutants into the air, contributing to environmental and public health concerns.
Gas-powered leaf blowers emit carbon dioxide, particulate matter, hydrocarbons, and other pollutants that worsen urban air quality. According to the California Air Resources Board, one hour of operating a commercial gas-powered leaf blower can produce smog-forming emissions comparable to driving a modern passenger car about 1,100 miles. This striking comparison highlights the environmental impact of these machines and the need for cleaner alternatives.
The noise generated by leaf blowers is also a serious concern. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) states that repeated exposure to noise above 85 decibels can lead to hearing damage over time. Gas-powered leaf blowers commonly operate in the 90–100 decibel range at close distance, contributing significantly to urban noise pollution and negatively affecting residents, children, seniors, pets, and wildlife alike.
Fortunately, cleaner and quieter alternatives already exist. Electric leaf blowers and other low-noise landscaping tools allow us to maintain our properties without compromising public health or environmental quality.
We urge the City of Toronto to take meaningful action by phasing out gas-powered leaf blowers and encouraging the adoption of greener alternatives. By signing this petition, you are supporting a healthier, quieter, and more sustainable Toronto for everyone.
Help us bring back the sounds of nature to our city.
