The Issue

The heartache of losing a loved one to suicide is a feeling no one should have to endure. Gambling addiction is a silent predator that can lead individuals down a path of destruction, often resulting in tragic outcomes, including suicide. Research has consistently shown a strong correlation between gambling addiction and increased suicide rates, casting a dark shadow over countless families. It's time to address this issue head-on by banning gambling adverts on TV and during large sporting events, spaces where these ads have the largest impact.

In recent years, the proliferation of gambling advertisements has normalized harmful betting behaviour. This advertising blitz targets individuals of all ages, creating an environment where the allure of gambling is difficult to escape. Particularly perilous is the exposure during prime-time TV slots and major sporting events, times when families gather and the impressionable young are watching.

According to recent statistics, thousands of individuals are directly impacted by gambling-related harm in our country alone. The UK Gambling Commission reported that there are nearly 400,000 "problem gamblers" in the country, and a significant percentage of these individuals suffer from mental health issues exacerbated by their gambling problems. This isn't just a number; these are real people, our friends and family, who find themselves trapped in a devastating cycle. Individuals diagnosed with a gambling disorder are approximately 15 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. Up to 81% of people seeking treatment for problem gambling experience suicidal ideation, and between 13% and 30% attempt suicide

The pressure to bet, fueled by incessant advertising, can be overwhelming and unrelenting. We must shield vulnerable individuals from this predatory practice. Emulating successful campaigns in countries like Italy and Belgium, where gambling ads near sporting events and on TV are banned, would be a foundational step in combating this crisis.

By implementing a ban, we can reduce the visibility and influence of gambling advertisements, creating safer, healthier environments for everyone. This petition calls upon broadcasting networks, sports organizations, and regulators to prohibit gambling ads during TV broadcasts and at large sporting events. Together, let's prioritize mental health and protect our loved ones from unnecessary harm.

Please sign this petition to save lives and create a society where individuals are not coerced into gambling by pervasive advertisements. Your voice can drive change.
