Ban foreign investors buying residential property in Ireland

Ban foreign investors buying residential property in Ireland
The Issue
There are no restrictions on foreign residential real estate investors buying property in Ireland. This means that both EU/ EEA and non-EU/ non-EEA nationals can purchase property here without limitation. Owning residential property in Ireland does not entitle the owner to a right of residence here.
These properties are being bought in bulk to then be rented out for profit. The ‘lack of supply’ of housing is a major issue. Then how can foreign investors be allowed to bulk buy new housing estates!? This is not a new phenomenon but has been highlighted by ‘CrazyHousePrices’ where 80% of a new development is being sold to foreign investors.
These properties can then be left vacant as there is no vacant property tax.
New Zealand have banned foreign investors purchasing private property. Canada have implemented high taxes on foreign investors. We are calling on the Irish government to do the same. Residents of Ireland should be prioritised for housing.
some news headlines highlighting this:
- 485-unit development approved in Cabra for UK build-to-let investor Tristan Capital
- Cairn Homes sells 150 homes to cuckoo fund as it reports profit of €24m
German investor to acquire Greystones apartments for €60m.
