Ban Fireworks to Protect the Environment, Pets, and Individuals With PTSD

The Issue

As a longtime dog owner, I've witnessed the distress that fireworks cause in my pets during the celebratory months of July. It pains me to see my dogs cower in fear, unable to understand the origins of the explosive noises that penetrate even the safety of our home. The problem extends beyond just the suffering of our pets, though; fireworks contribute significantly to environmental damage and pose potential triggers for those with PTSD.

Each year, wildfires exacerbated by airborne sparks from fireworks destroy thousands of acres of land, causing devastating impacts on our ecosystems. In the U.S alone, fireworks are responsible for an average of 18,500 fires annually, including 1,300 total structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside and other fires (National Fire Prevention Association). Moreover, the loud bangs and flashes stress not only pets but individuals suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), especially veterans.

It seems we have found ourselves in a worrisome tradition, where celebration comes at the cost of environmental health, individual's peace of mind, and our pets' well-being. It's time we advocate for other safer ways to celebrate our national holidays. Please join me in calling for a ban on fireworks. Sign the petition now.
