Ban fireworks in Pointe Claire and West Island
The Issue
I live in Beaconsfield, and like many of my neighbours, I cherish the serene environment, our warm community, and the safety it provides. However, these values are under threat every time fireworks light up our skies during celebrations. The distressing events of recent festivities have compelled me to speak out and request an urgent ban on fireworks in Pointe Claire, Beaconsfield, and the greater West Island area.
The catalyst for this petition was the unfortunate incident involving Bella, a beloved pit bull dog. During the St Jean Baptiste fireworks, Bella was so terrified by the explosions that she bolted away from her home in Pointe Claire, only to be found much later in Beaconsfield. This is not just about Bella; countless pets experience paralyzing fear and anxiety from these loud and sudden sounds. It's a well-documented issue that fireworks cause severe stress and can result in harmful situations for animals. Statistics show that during fireworks displays, animal shelters and pounds see a significant increase in stray and lost animals.
Moreover, both Pointe Claire and Beaconsfield are inadequately equipped to handle such sudden influxes of displaced pets. Currently, Pointe Claire has only one cage available, while Beaconsfield has just three. Without a dedicated humane society in these areas, the strain on local resources becomes overwhelming, often leaving lost pets without appropriate care and shelter.
While celebrating our cultural and national events is important, it must not come at the cost of the safety and wellbeing of our community's animals and peace of mind for residents. There are safer and more humane alternatives to traditional fireworks, such as laser light shows or silent fireworks displays, which can provide beautiful entertainment without causing distress.
By banning traditional fireworks and switching to these alternatives, we can preserve our celebrations and protect the vulnerable animals and sensitive populations in our neighborhoods. Please join me in urging local leaders and municipalities to prioritize the mental and physical safety of animals and residents by banning fireworks in our region.
Sign this petition to make our communities safer and more considerate for all its inhabitants.
