The Issue

Fireworks terrify my dogs, causing immense distress every year. This isn't just about the discomfort of beloved pets; it's a widespread concern affecting varied aspects of our community. Fireworks not only create chaos for animals but also significantly impact veterans living with PTSD, and contribute to environmental pollution.

In Papillion, Omaha, and Plattsmouth, Nebraska, the vivid displays of fireworks light up the sky, but beneath this façade of celebration lies a trail of negative consequences. Studies show that the loud noises from fireworks can induce panic attacks and heighten anxiety among veterans with PTSD, leading to flashbacks and severe emotional distress. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, around 11-20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD in a given year, indicating that a significant portion of our community could be adversely affected by firework celebrations.

Moreover, animals, both domestic and wild, suffer greatly from the noise pollution caused by fireworks. Pets have heightened senses, and the explosions can be terrifying and disorienting for them. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) warns that many pets run away from home due to the fear of fireworks, leading to tragic outcomes. Additionally, wildlife is similarly impacted, facing disorientation that can lead to fatal accidents and abandonment of habitats.

Environmental concerns also cannot be ignored. Fireworks contribute to air pollution, releasing harmful chemicals and particulates into the atmosphere. According to research published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, fireworks can lead to a significant increase in particulate matter, which is harmful to human health and the environment.

Instead of fireworks, our communities can explore alternative, quieter forms of celebration, such as community light shows or drone displays, which are both environmentally friendly and considerate to all members of our community.

We urge the local governments of Papillion, Omaha, and Plattsmouth to take action and ban the use of fireworks. By signing this petition, we can pave the way for safer, more inclusive, and environmentally-sound festivities in our community. Please sign and share to help us protect our pets, veterans, wildlife, and environment.
