Ban fireworks in New Zealand or limit to a regional fireworks display only

The issue

Guy fawkes night is “celebrated” here in New Zealand on the 5th of November every year. The history of guy fawkes as described by “Britannica” is that “In January 1606 the British Parliament mandated the observance of Guy Fawkes Day on November 5 to commemorate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. Celebrated in the United Kingdom and some Commonwealth countries”.  Fireworks has a huge negative impact on animals for many different reasons including:

  • chemicals are dangerous for cats and dogs as well as humans which can cause respiratory diseases such as asthma
  • careless use can also result in mutilations and fatal accidents of animals in the surrounding areas as well as the risk of fires which can harm animals, people, flora and infrastructure
  • can cause fight-or-flight response to animals which causes their blood pressure and hate rate to rise. Under this many animals can panic and have injury caused to themselves while trying to escape or run away or even in some cases can become aggressive due to their fear.
  • animals Have been known to in some cases have heart attacks and die under stress
  • a study by the SPCA shows that 79% of horses become anxious during the guy fawkes period and 45% of dogs
  • pollution occurs along beaches, river sides which can end up in our oceans and consumed by marine life
  • Many recordings have been noted of horses becoming “spooked” by fireworks and dying especially from breaking legs due to running off when getting a fright from fireworks
  • People suffering from PTSD are at risk of flashbacks and distressing situations as the noise of fireworks sounds like explosions linked to people who have been in combat etc
  • When fireworks burst into their colourful lights, chemical debris is left scattered across the ground. Perchlorate is one of them and it is often associated with contaminating soil and water. This chemical remains in the environment for long periods, easily absorbed by neighbouring flora - earth.org
  • “Fireworks are significant carbon emitters and generally produce carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. According to Tree Hugger, fireworks release about 60,340 metric tons of CO2 in the US annually. This is generally higher than the emission from 12,000 gas-engine vehicles every year.” -8 billion trees 31/7/23.
The list goes on for so many other impacts fireworks have and yet for a cause which means nothing here in New Zealand. Fireworks have no right to be here in New Zealand and the purpose of this petition is calling for justice on behalf of the animals, PTSD sufferers and the environment to ban the sale of fireworks here in New Zealand. People would not be able to legally set off fireworks here in New Zealand possibly with the only exception of one public display for one night only and for a certain period of time. This would ultimately eliminate many private firework gathering reducing the impact it would have on the above explained factors
