Ban feline declawing in the state of Washington

The Issue

In our state of Washington, this cruel and unnecessary procedure continues to be legal despite its severe implications on a cat's health and well-being. Cats who have been subjected to this surgery often experience chronic pain, behavioral changes, and an increased likelihood of biting, as their primary means of defense have been taken away (American Veterinary Medical Association).

The term declawing is misleading. A more accurate description is the amputation of the top of a cat's toe bones or de-knuckling.  According to a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association,

  • -up to 50% of cats suffer complications as a result of declawing
  • up to 20% of declawed cats develop visible chronic health problems due to the procedure

It is time for us to follow in the footsteps of states like New York, Maryland, and the city of Tacoma, which have already banned this inhumane practice (Humane Society). We must advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Don't stand by while this cruelty continues!  By signing this petition, you are demanding our state legislators to enact legislation banning feline declawing in Washington State. Stand with us against animal cruelty; sign up today!
