Ban Elective Declawing of Cats in Ontario

The Issue

The practice of elective declawing in cats must be halted throughout Ontario. This procedure involves removing the last bone of each toe, not just the claws, which is akin to amputating a human fingertip at the last joint. Such a practice leads to significant and prolonged pain in our feline companions. Furthermore, it can result in numerous long-term complications, both medical and behavioral.

Medically, declawing can lead to chronic pain, arthritis, and other debilitating conditions. Cats rely on their claws for balance, exercise, and territory marking, and their removal disrupts these natural behaviors. Behaviorally, declawed cats are known to exhibit increased aggression, biting, and inappropriate urination outside the litter box. These problems arise because declawing strips them of their primary means of self-defense, leading to anxiety and stress.

The ethical concerns surrounding elective declawing are undeniable. Our neighboring provinces, such as Québec, Nova Scotia, Alberta, and Manitoba, have already recognized the cruelty of this practice and have implemented bans. It is disheartening that Ontario remains the only province permitting elective declawing, and it's time for us to follow suit and align with responsible and humane treatment standards.

We owe it to our cats to protect them from unnecessary suffering. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against a practice that is marred with cruelty and supporting a motion to ban elective declawing across Ontario. Let's ensure that our beloved pets live healthy, pain-free lives.
