BAN DRAWSTRING BAGS IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS 

We work in education, across many schools. 

In most schools, the children keep their PE kits in drawstring bags. We have heard of, and seen, too many horror stories where these bags are not only are a huge trip hazard, they are quite frankly a danger to life.

We have known of (when the children take their P.E bags home), pets being caught up in the strings and sadly losing lives. Frighteningly too of children being caught up in the drawstring around their necks, which causes panic... and when they try and set themselves free from the noose, they pull and -as it is drawstring, the strings only get tighter. Strangulation can happen in seconds, with the children losing consciousness rapidly.

Our research shows that children and babies are at risk from loop cords.

The Child Accident Prevent Trust have recorded 30 babies/children have died through loop cord accidents in the past 15 years.

A petition of similar nature was circulating in 2014, but not enough awareness was raised at the time. The petition was started by a family who sadly lost their child to loop cord strangulation.

We need all these bags removed from our schools- to be replaced with a simple, safe backpack before we hear of a tragedy in a place where we try to keep children safe.
