The Issue

In recent years, Michigan has seen a significant rise in the establishment of data centers, which, while serving the increasing demand for data storage and cloud computing, are imposing severe challenges to our environment and community. The growth of data centers in Michigan is directly correlating with escalating concerns about their substantial carbon footprint, water usage, and pressure on local infrastructure.

Data centers are notorious for consuming enormous amounts of electricity, much of which still originates from non-renewable sources. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers in the United States alone use more than 70 billion kWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 6.5 million homes in one year. In Michigan, where a significant proportion of our electricity is generated from coal and natural gas, this translates directly to increased emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants, contributing to global warming and negatively affecting air quality.

Additionally, data centers require vast amounts of water for cooling purposes. In a time when communities around Michigan are facing water scarcity and quality issues, the extensive water usage by data centers is not sustainable. The shift to building more data centers demands an urgent reevaluation of our priorities, especially as local water resources become increasingly stressed.

These facilities also place a significant strain on Michigan's infrastructure. The rapid increase in heavy traffic from construction and operational logistics can deteriorate roads and transportation systems. Moreover, the general noise and light pollution from such facilities disrupt local ecosystems and decrease the quality of life for nearby residents.

Michigan has always prided itself on maintaining its natural beauty and fostering sustainable communities. Allowing the proliferation of data centers undermines our state's environmental goals and community well-being. There are viable alternatives to supporting our digital needs without compromising our environment and local quality of life.

Therefore, we urge the Michigan state government to impose a ban on the establishment of new data centers. Instead, we advocate for the promotion of data storage solutions that emphasize energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Encouraging the adoption of renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency standards for existing data centers, and investing in innovative cooling technologies are viable steps towards meeting our data needs responsibly.

Please sign this petition to protect Michigan's environment and communities from the adverse effects of data centers, and help us pave the way for a sustainable future. Your support is crucial in sending a clear message to our legislators that the health of our environment and the quality of life for Michigan residents should be our top priority.
