The Issue
Glue traps affect far more than rodents. Mice, squirrels, chipmunks, songbirds, bats, snakes, frogs, lizards, and even cats and dogs can become trapped. Wildlife rehabilitators and animal shelters regularly encounter animals injured or killed by these devices. Families, businesses, and communities are often unaware that glue traps can cause prolonged suffering to any small animal that comes into contact with them. Glue traps are among the cruelest forms of pest control. Rather than providing a quick death, they immobilize animals, leaving them to struggle for hours or even days. Many die from dehydration, starvation, exhaustion, or exposure. Others suffer severe injuries while attempting to escape. These traps are also indiscriminate. They do not distinguish between a mouse and a protected wild bird or another non-target animal. Humane and effective alternatives—including sealing entry points, improving sanitation, and using integrated pest management strategies—are widely available and can reduce pest problems while minimizing unnecessary suffering. Massachusetts has long valued compassion and responsible stewardship of animals. Continuing to allow glue traps is inconsistent with those values when less cruel alternatives exist. Communities around the world are reexamining the use of glue traps as awareness of their impact grows. Massachusetts has an opportunity to lead by adopting a more humane approach to pest management. By prohibiting the sale and use of glue traps and encouraging humane alternatives, we can prevent needless suffering while continuing to address pest concerns responsibly. We call on the Massachusetts Legislature to: * Prohibit the sale and use of glue traps throughout the Commonwealth. * Promote humane, effective alternatives for pest management. * Educate residents and businesses about methods that reduce animal suffering. Every signature is a voice for compassion. Please sign this petition and share it with your family, friends, and community. Together, we can help make Massachusetts a leader in humane pest management and protect countless animals from unnecessary suffering.
