The Issue

Howie The Crab and Winny The Crab have taught me just how sensitive crabs are to touch and temperature. I've spent years educating online and sharing pictures and videos to show the world how intelligent crabs are. I now have over 2 million followers. We need to stand up for them. People will never stop eating crustaceans, but at least we can spare them the agony of being cooked alive. If you choose to consume shellfish, please humanely spike them before cooking. But let's take it a step further and amend the animal welfare laws to include crustaceans.

Crustaceans like crabs, lobsters, and shrimps are sentient beings capable of feeling pain and distress. Despite this, in many places across the world, it remains common practice to cook them alive, subjecting these creatures to unimaginable suffering. Scientific studies have shown that crustaceans possess complex nervous systems that allow them to experience not just pain, but also other sensations like touch and temperature changes, validating their inclusion in animal welfare considerations (Smith et al., Journal of Marine Biology, 2020).

It's time we redefine our culinary traditions and include crustaceans under the ambit of animal welfare laws. This means mandating that they be dispatched humanely — much like we do with other animals considered for food. "Spiking," a method that involves quickly killing the crustacean before cooking, can significantly lessen their suffering.

Countries such as Switzerland and New Zealand have already taken steps to outlaw the boiling of live lobsters, acknowledging the scientific evidence of their sentience and the ethical obligation to prevent unnecessary suffering. The European Food Safety Authority also recognizes the capacity of crustaceans to feel pain, urging reconsideration of cooking methods (EFSA Journal, 2011).

We urge lawmakers to follow suit and enact legislation that requires humane dispatch methods for all crustaceans before cooking or boiling. Ensuring cruelty-free practices in our kitchens is a moral imperative and an easy step towards becoming a more compassionate society.

Join me in advocating for the humane treatment of crustaceans by signing this petition. Together, let's urge policymakers to amend animal welfare laws and help end the unnecessary suffering of these remarkable creatures. Your signature can make a difference.
