Ban civilian ownership of firearms

The Issue

In the United States, firearms are responsible for a significant proportion of suicides, homicides, and other violent crimes. Each year, thousands of ordinary civilians lose their lives or their loved ones to gun violence. It's time to take definitive action to protect lives and create safer communities by banning the ownership of guns for normal civilians, allowing access only for law enforcement and registered hunters.

The alarming statistics highlight a dire situation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, nearly 24,000 people died by suicide using a firearm, which accounts for about half of the total suicides in the country. Moreover, the Gun Violence Archive reports that in 2020 alone, there were over 19,000 gun-related homicides in the United States. These numbers are not just figures; they represent mothers, fathers, children, and friends whose lives were tragically cut short.

Research and evidence from other countries show that stricter gun control laws correlate with lower gun-related deaths and crime rates. For example, Australia’s gun buyback program, initiated in 1996 after a mass shooting, resulted in a significant decline in gun-related deaths, including suicides. Implementing similar policies in the U.S. could potentially yield comparable results and save countless lives.

Owning a firearm is often argued to be a constitutional right; however, the safety of our citizens and the reduction of unnecessary deaths should take precedence. Restricting gun access does not mean eliminating the right to self-defense; it means ensuring that firearms do not fall into the wrong hands while preserving opportunities for lawful use by professionals like law enforcement and registered hunters.

The time for change is now. By redefining and tightening gun ownership laws, we can foster an environment where everyone feels safer. Let us work together to support legislation that prioritizes human life and reduces the toll of gun violence. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to ban civilian ownership of guns and implement stricter control measures for the greater good of our society.
