The Issue

I have always found peace and solace in the pristine beauty of Tilden Park. It's a refuge for me and many others, a place where nature thrives in its purest form. Unfortunately, the serenity of this beautiful sanctuary is being compromised by the pervasive presence of cigarette litter and smoke.

Cigarette butts litter the trails and picnic areas, posing a serious threat to wildlife and the environment. According to Keep America Beautiful, cigarette butts are the most littered item on Earth, and they are not biodegradable. This toxic waste contaminates our soil and water, endangering plants and animals that call Tilden Park home. Furthermore, discarded cigarette butts significantly increase the risk of wildfires, which have become more frequent and devastating in recent years.

Tilden Park, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a cherished gem. Thousands of visitors come to enjoy its scenic beauty, hiking trails, and family-friendly spaces. We need to ensure it remains a clean and healthy environment for current and future generations. Many parks across the United States have already implemented smoking bans to protect both nature and visitors’ health, including nearby parks like Mount Tamalpais and Point Reyes.

Scientific studies have shown the harmful effects of secondhand smoke on humans, including increased risks of respiratory diseases and cancer. Everyone deserves the right to enjoy clean air, especially in outdoor settings dedicated to natural preservation. By banning cigarettes in Tilden Park, we can all breathe a little easier.

Please join me in urging local authorities and the East Bay Regional Park District to put a ban on smoking in Tilden Park. Let's work together to preserve the natural beauty and health of this beloved space. Your signature can make a difference and help keep our park a haven for wildlife and a healthy retreat for all.
