Ban Caltrain from Emitting Unusual Horn Noise at Mountain View Station!
The Issue
Residents along the Caltrain line in Mountain View, particularly families with children, are suffering greatly from the abnormal horn noise caused by Caltrain. Since settling here in middle of 2023, many residents have noticed that the train noise has suddenly become unbearably loud, to the point where it rattles window panes. This disruptive noise persists even during early mornings, late nights, and holidays, severely disturbing residents’ sleep and daily lives. Although the train noise has slightly improved since 2025, what was once a faint sound has turned into an inescapable barrage of noise, affecting our health and robbing us of the peace we deserve.
If this unusual horn noise continues unchecked, the physical and mental health of residents will face long-term damage. Children, deprived of sleep, will suffer direct impacts on their development and ability to learn, while adults, plagued by sleep deprivation, face increased stress that could lead to anxiety or depression. In fact, the individual initiating this petition is already physically and mentally exhausted, on the brink of collapse, and forced to rely on earplugs just to get through the night. Caltrain uses “electrification” as an excuse, but the noise is disproportionately severe at Mountain View Station compared to other stops, where it remains relatively quiet—this simply doesn’t add up!
Action must be taken now because every day of delay deepens residents’ suffering, particularly threatening the health of our children. We’ve endured this noise for nearly two years, yet the authorities have done nothing. Yesterday, when I took Caltrain to San Francisco, I noticed that the train horns were used sparingly along the way, except for the outrageously excessive honking at Mountain View. —This isn’t a technical issue, but a failure of management and decision-making. Banning these unnecessary train horns immediately will not only safeguard our sleep and mental well-being but also send a clear message to Caltrain: residents’ rights cannot be ignored. Please support this petition to restore peace to Mountain View and spare us from the relentless exhaustion caused by this noise!
