There are renewed calls on the Irish Government to ban hare coursing after details emerged about terrorised hares who were hit and mauled at an animal cruelty event in Kerry.
Sickening documents, published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service – which shamefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien – show that one of the hares was euthanised due to the severity of the injuries suffered. https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-kilflynn-2023-2024.pdf
This hare was among 71 captured from the wild and held in captivity for up to seven weeks for use as live bait for dogs to chase.
Ahead of the 2-day coursing meeting, trials were held. Trials involve releasing a hare and then unleashing a dog to give chase. Records show that at the Kilflynn trials, 3 hares were hit by dogs and 1 was pinned to the ground, i.e. caught by a dog, mauled into the ground and held in place. Just one of these hares was examined for injuries.
A week later, on Day 1 of coursing (30 September 2023), one hare was hit and pinned. This hare was “euthanised as a result of injuries”. One of many victims of a cruel bloodsport that most people in Ireland want outlawed.
Shame on the vet who “certified the hares fit for coursing” and shame on the Irish Government for allowing this obscenity to continue.

Contact the leaders of government parties Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Green Party. Remind them that a RED C opinion poll has shown that a 77% majority want the government to ban coursing, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban. Tell them that coursing is illegal in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales and it's time for a ban in the Republic.
