Shame on the Cashel Palace Hotel for again hosting a fox hunt ball.
The hotel is set to welcome hunters from the Tipperary Foxhounds hunt for the event this Saturday (17 February 2024).
The hunt ball, which will take place the evening after a fox hunt, was also held at Cashel Palace Hotel last year.
According to a report in the Irish Field of 23 February 2023, hotel staff shamefully gave drinks to Tipperary Foxhounds hunters before a hunt which started from a car park next to the Rock of Cashel hours before the hunt ball.
“Cashel Palace staff were on hand to distribute restorative drinks and other good things to sustain the riders for what lay ahead,” the report outlined.
During the hunt that followed, foxes were chased by a pack of 29 hounds.
The pack of dogs “found [a fox] and crossed the Ardmayle road into the old racecourse” and chased the unfortunate animal across fields. Later, a fox “broke for the country running towards Cashel before crossing the road into Brittas House Stud”, with hounds seen “streaming across the parkland” in pursuit of the fox.
Another fox was also persecuted – the hunt “crossed the link road into O’Keeffe’s of Hore Abbey where there was some serious jumping…They ran right for the town where the field, under pressure, jumped a good stiff wall onto the road just down from the mart…hounds ran right around the town on the Golden side before again going back into Hore Abbey. Like all good things, it had to come to an end and hounds marked under the ruins of Hore Abbey.” https://www.theirishfield.ie/hunting-magic-day-ends-on-a-high-750712
The fate of this fox was not revealed but “marked” in fox hunting terminology refers to the point when the pack of hounds chase the fox into an earth or drain and this is typically followed by the arrival of the hunt’s terriermen who cruelly catch the fox using shovels, spades and terriers before the doomed animal is brutally killed.
Foxes are terrorised by the Tipperary Foxhounds twice a week on Saturdays and Wednesdays during the hunting season (October to March). The hunt has around 140 hounds.
The Cashel Palace Hotel disgracefully donated a “night for 2 at the Cashel Palace Hotel” to the hunt’s fundraising auction at last year's hunt ball. Other lots in the auction included a signed race card donated by rider Rachael Blackmore and a day’s hunting with Limerick Foxhounds, Ward Union deer hunt, Kilkenny Hunt, Carlow Farmers’ Hunt, North Kilkenny Hunt, Fingal Harriers and Waterford Hunt.
Shame on Cashel Palace Hotel. Boycott businesses that support fox hunting, a bloodsport which the vast majority in Ireland want outlawed.
A RED C opinion poll found that a 77% majority agree that the Irish Government should BAN FOX HUNTING, with just 12% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban. Please respond to our action alert below and join calls for a long overdue ban.
ACTION ALERT
Boycott Cashel Palace Hotel and any business that supports fox hunting.
