Recent years have seen an upsurge in the incidence of illegal hare hunting in the Irish countryside. This is a worrying development, because our native hare has already been in decline for the past half century due to habitat loss and the ravages of climate change, a fact that ought to concern us all given that this mammal is supposedly “protected” and is listed in the Red Data Book of wildlife as a species of international importance.

However, I’m not impressed by the call from coursing clubs for urgent action to clamp down on the hare hunting gangs. It’s classic case of the kettle calling the pot black. True, the poachers need to be tackled and put out of business, but how can you persuade people not to engage in illegal hare chasing events when hare coursing itself remains legal?

The legal version of this so-called sport is no less cruel than the proscribed one, involving as it does the capture of thousands of hares each year for use as live bait. Apart from the terror ad trauma experienced by these captives when forced to run from dogs, often in the worst of weather, coursing also plays directly into the hands of the illegal poachers:

Due to the confining of hares in paddocks or large wire compounds in the countryside, poachers routinely snatch them for their own entertainment. So coursing makes life easier for the poachers, who would otherwise have to scour large tracts of land to find hares.

If coursing clubs are serious in their professed concern for the status of the Irish Hare, I suggest that they set an example to would-be law breakers by ceasing their own barbarous and irresponsible misuse of our hare population.

Otherwise, the illegal hunters can continue to claim that they’re no different to their country cousins in the “respectable” coursing fraternity.
