Ban bird deterrent spikes on buildings and light fixtures

Ban bird deterrent spikes on buildings and light fixtures
The Issue
Remove the spikes on buildings and light fixtures that deter birds from perching and roosting.
We are calling on the government and local councils to introduce a ban on the use of bird deterring spikes on the tops of buildings and light fixtures.
In California, sharp spikes can be seen on the edges of buildings and on lampposts in attempts to deter pigeons from landing and perching on these areas and reduce droppings that can cause disease in humans. However, these spikes do little other than injure and kill birds, resulting in blood spattering and bird carcasses which can bring disease on their own as well as attract more animals.
Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, Section 4 (1) it is illegal to cause unnecessary suffering:
(1) A person commits an offence if:
(a) an act of his, or a failure of his to act, causes an animal to suffer,
(b) he knew, or ought reasonably to have known, that the act, or failure to act, would have that effect or be likely to do so,
(c) the animal is a protected animal, and
(d) the suffering is unnecessary.
Failing to ban these spikes will be in violation of this act, and will continue to cause harm to birds and other animals, ultimately increasing the risk of disease in humans compared to the risk associated with droppings.
Additionally, it is inhumane to clear trees and land- the natural habitats for birds and countless other animals- and then construct these spikes on the tops of buildings and lights as if these animals have endless landing options.
In a world that never stops exploiting nature and its inhabitants, please help protect our precious wildlife by signing our petition.
