Ban bicycles and e-vehicles in Bournemouth's pedestrian areas

Ban bicycles and e-vehicles in Bournemouth's pedestrian areas
The Issue
The growing prevalence of bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, and skateboards in pedestrianised areas of Bournemouth, including Commercial Road, Bournemouth Square, and Old Christchurch Road, has become a concerning safety issue for both pedestrians and riders alike. The bustling atmosphere of these areas should prioritize pedestrian foot traffic, ensuring that people can stroll and shop without fear of fast-moving vehicles weaving in between them, posing potential hazards.
Statistics show that accidents involving e-scooters and e-bikes have risen by 70% in urban areas, with many incidents occurring in pedestrianised spaces where unsuspecting walkers are caught off guard by these silent, speedy contraptions. In an area as populated as Bournemouth, the risks are just too high to ignore. Many towns and cities across the UK have already put measures in place to restrict these vehicles, significantly reducing accidents and enhancing the pedestrian experience.
In addition to safety concerns, the congestion of bicycles and e-vehicles in these areas disrupts the peaceful environment that residents and tourists alike seek when visiting Bournemouth's town centre. Implementing a ban will encourage safer, more accessible pathways that can be enjoyed by everyone, fostering a vibrant atmosphere where businesses can thrive without the disruption of vehicles.
We propose comprehensive signage and physical barriers be introduced to clearly define the boundaries where bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, and skateboards are prohibited. Furthermore, law enforcement, town rangers and community officers should be visible and active in these areas to ensure compliance and quickly address any violations with on the spot fines for offenders. If offenders are minors, then fines should be the responsibility of the parent or guardian. This will not only deter individuals from offending but also bring in revenue for BCP. It should not be policed by third party security companies masquerading as council employees, working on a commission basis.
For the well-being and safety of our community and visitors, and to enhance Bournemouth's town centre as a thriving pedestrian hub, support this petition to ban the use of bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, and skateboards in Commercial Road, Bournemouth Square, and Old Christchurch Road. Please sign and share this petition to help us implement this necessary change.
