The Issue

Growing up in Minneapolis, surrounded by the majestic beauty of our lakes and lush parklands, I have always appreciated the natural world around me. Yet, this beauty is under threat due to balloon releases. Helium balloons, once released into the atmosphere, travel vast distances before falling back to earth as litter. This debris endangers our precious wildlife and tarnishes the landscapes we so cherish.

Statistically, over 70% of balloon debris is found in oceans and coastlines, but our lakes and rivers are equally vulnerable. Animals often mistake these colorful remnants for food, leading to fatal consequences. Numerous wildlife rehabilitation centers have documented cases in which birds, turtles, and marine animals have died from ingesting or getting entangled in balloon fragments or their ribbons.

Despite the fleeting joy balloons can bring during celebrations, their environmental impact is long-lasting and devastating. In Minnesota, we pride ourselves on our commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. Taking action to ban balloon releases is a natural next step in preserving our environment for future generations.

Other municipalities, like Ocean City in Maryland, have successfully enacted balloon release bans, proving it is possible and effective. By implementing a similar ban here in Minneapolis, we can significantly reduce harmful litter and protect our local wildlife from unnecessary harm.

Let’s come together as a community to advocate for this change. With your support, we can call on local lawmakers to prioritize the health of our environment and ban the intentional release of balloons in Minneapolis. Sign this petition today to safeguard our natural habitats and wildlife for tomorrow.
