Ban Assault-Style Weapons in Minnesota

The Issue

Another tragedy at a Minneapolis Catholic school.

This is what gun violence looks like in Minnesota now.

On August 27, a man in his early 20s opened fire with a rifle through the windows of Annunciation Catholic School, targeting children in the pews. The shooter brought a shotgun, a rifle, and a pistol—and left behind grieving families, traumatized classmates, and a shattered community.

This didn’t happen on a battlefield. It happened inside a place of worship. In a school. In broad daylight.

And it keeps happening.

This was the fifth school shooting in the U.S. this year, and Minnesota is now home to one of the worst. No other developed nation allows weapons designed for war to be used against schoolchildren. We cannot continue to accept this as normal.

That’s why we are calling on:

Governor Tim Walz
The Minnesota State Legislature
Attorney General Keith Ellison

to immediately pass a statewide ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, including for private sales and transfers.

There is no reason a civilian needs weapons capable of firing dozens of rounds into a crowd of second graders. Common-sense gun laws save lives—and banning assault weapons is a proven step supported by a majority of Minnesotans.

We can protect the Second Amendment and still say: Enough.

We owe it to the children of Annunciation. We owe it to every teacher, parent, and student who walks into a Minnesota school and wonders: Will I be next?
