Ban artificial food dyes in Anchorage schools

Ban artificial food dyes in Anchorage schools
The Issue
Seeing firsthand the negative effects of artificial food dyes on my child's behavior and learning has been eye-opening. When I removed these dyes from their diet, I witnessed a remarkable improvement in their mood and ability to focus. This experience compels me to advocate for change not just for my child, but for all children in Anchorage, AK.
Artificial food dyes are prevalent in many snacks and meals served in schools, surprising many parents who are unaware of their potential impact. Numerous studies have linked artificial food dyes—such as Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6—to hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has long called for the removal of these dyes, citing evidence that some children are particularly sensitive to them.
These dyes are not only found in school-provided meals, but also in snacks and drinks brought into schools for classroom parties, events, and donations—making exposure even more widespread.
Schools should be a place where children can thrive both academically and physically, and part of that responsibility includes serving foods that support health and learning. Countries like Norway and Austria have banned many of these dyes already, opting for natural alternatives that do not compromise safety or quality.
Therefore, I urge the Anchorage School Board to take decisive action by banning artificial food dyes in school meals, snacks, and vending machines. Instead, schools can provide foods that utilize natural coloring derived from fruits and vegetables.
By supporting this petition, you are helping to ensure that our schools provide the healthiest possible environment for children in Anchorage. Please join me in advocating for this essential change to protect the well-being of our kids. Sign this petition to make a positive impact on our community.
