Ban All Helicopters from Crossing Airplane Paths at Reagan National Airport Washington DC

The Issue

As the whole nation grieves the loss of innocent lives in the mid-air collision between the American Airlines (AA) plane and the military helicopter near the Reagan National Airport (DCA) near Washington, D.C., we call on federal, state, and DC leaders and policymakers to prevent this kind of disaster from happening ever again.  While this tragedy remains under full investigation, one point is clear: a helicopter must never again find itself in the path of an airplane at DCA.

According to early reports, the plane, AA Flight No. 5342, was carrying 60 passengers and 4 crew members, including many skaters, coaches and their families returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. There were 3 soldiers aboard the military aircraft which was apparently on a training flight near the airport.  As of now, there are no known survivors in the disastrous event caused by a preventable error when the helicopter was permitted to cross the airplane's path while the plane was approaching a runway at DCA.

This needs to change: DCA must have restricted air space in the path of landing/departing planes for all helicopters (military, police, civilian, or VIP). A minor error can lead to a major catastrophe. We need to set safer standards at DCA airport. By prohibiting helicopters from flying along the paths of airplanes, we can reduce the risk of potential collisions and save lives.  Reducing and redirecting helicopter traffic may require additional investment in the road network and the public transit system in the DMV area.

It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of our loved ones. Let's stand up together to make a change.  Please sign our petition today.
