The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the future of our planet and the environment that my grandchildren and great grandchildren will inherit. It's heartbreaking to see the negative impact that data centers are having on our world. These enormous facilities, housing thousands of servers, consume vast amounts of electricity and are responsible for a significant portion of carbon emissions. The relentless demand for data storage and cloud computing power comes at the expense of our planet's health and future.

According to experts, data centers currently account for about 1% of global electricity use, which is equivalent to the total consumption of some small countries. Moreover, with the exponential growth of data generation and online services, this figure is expected to double by the end of the decade. The emissions from generating this electricity mostly come from fossil fuels, further accelerating climate change and environmental degradation.

In addition to their carbon footprint, data centers use large quantities of water for cooling their servers. This leads to a depletion of local water resources, harming ecosystems and reducing the availability of clean water in many regions around the world. Recent reports indicate that large data centers can use up to 1.5 million gallons of water a day, a clearly unsustainable practice when water scarcity is a growing global concern.

We must take action now to mitigate these harmful impacts before it is too late. By advocating for the ban of all data centers, we aim to push the technology industry towards more sustainable solutions. This includes investing in renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and developing innovative cooling technologies that have a minimal environmental impact.

Equally important is the implementation of stringent regulations and setting bold targets for reducing emissions and water usage by tech companies. Governments and corporations must work together to create a framework that prioritizes environmental sustainability while still allowing for technological progress. Technologies like edge computing present a feasible alternative, reducing reliance on large centralized data centers.

Let's make a stand for sustainable technology that respects our planet and the well-being of future generations. I urge you to sign this petition calling for the ban of all data centers, and together, let's secure a healthier environment for generations to come.
