Ban All Bottom Trawling in US Waters

The Issue

Bottom trawling destroys entire marine ecosystems, including those that have existed for thousands of years. It leaves behind a barren, scarred landscape where nothing can survive. Nearly two-thirds of every catch is simply discarded and wasted. This needs to stop.

Bottom trawling is a fishing practice that involves dragging heavy nets across the ocean floor. It causes irreparable damage to underwater habitats such as coral reefs and seagrass beds. As these ecosystems are vital for the health of the ocean, their destruction leads to a domino effect, threatening marine biodiversity and the countless species that depend on these habitats for survival.

Marine experts have repeatedly emphasized the severe impacts of bottom trawling. The dredging action not only disturbs the seabed but also releases carbon stored in the seafloor, contributing significantly to climate change. In reality, bottom trawling is one of the most unselective forms of fishing, often catching and killing unintended species, also known as bycatch.

The United States has vast territorial waters known for their rich marine life. It is our responsibility to protect these waters and the incredible biodiversity they harbor. Several countries have already implemented bans or strict restrictions on bottom trawling to preserve their maritime environments. The US must follow suit to prevent further degradation of our seafloor ecosystems.

We call upon the US government to lead the charge for oceanic preservation and to ban all bottom trawling in US territorial waters. This initiative will help promote sustainable fishing practices, protect endangered species, and ensure the long-term health of our marine environments for future generations.

Join us in demanding action to save our seas before it's too late. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to implement a nationwide ban on bottom trawling. Together, we can make a difference for our oceans' health and resilience.
