The Issue
Hi!
My name is Alexa Dillow and I am currently enrolled in the School of Music at Millikin University. I do not like the direction the school is heading towards, embracing widespread AI usage within the classroom, both openly by professors and semi-less-openly students, who are barred from using it on work via our integrity standards, but societally around the school, more and more people are starting to use AI every single day on things that either need to or should have an actual soul behind it.
The environmental impact of AI is already apparent in these opening phases. Google says their GHG emissions are up 48% since 2019, and Microsoft’s emissions are up 29% since 2020. Every single AI prompt uses the same electricity as running a lightbulb for 20 minutes, and it’s gotten to the point that they are cancelling the decommissioning of certain coal mines to power it. (source: allianceforscience.org) All of this is also disproportionately affecting black and brown communities across the country. Places with both a large metropolitan population and an ai super processor are finding things like toxic water, and more rurally, the toxins are ruining any farm land it gets near. (farmprogress.org)
The signatures I am collecting show a moral stand against the use of AI in the classroom. We cannot be both pro AI and pro our mother earth. My solution would be to educate students on the harms and dangers of AI while banning outright use of it in ALL work, by both students and professors. We pay too much tuition if you’re going to rely on things like OpenAI.
That’s all, Thank you!!
