Ban after school detention in Hampshire County Council schools
Ban after school detention in Hampshire County Council schools
The Issue
In Hampshire County, a growing number of concerns regarding the impact and effectiveness of after-school detention have come to light. Parents, educators, and students alike are questioning whether this traditional form of discipline actually contributes positively to student growth and behaviour management. It is essential that Hampshire County Council considers these concerns and re-evaluates the role of after-school detention in our schools.
Studies have shown that punitive measures, such as detention, may not address the underlying issues that drive undesirable behaviour. Instead, these methods can lead to increased resentment, a negative attitude towards school, and a decline in academic performance. According to a 2016 report by the Department for Education, schools that adopted restorative practices saw a notable improvement in student behaviour and engagement. Such practices focus on understanding conflict and improving relationships within the school community.
Additionally, after-school detention places undue strain on students who may already be facing challenges outside of school, such as family responsibilities, part-time work, or mental health issues. It is crucial that we provide support rather than punishment and create a nurturing environment where students can learn and flourish without fear of retribution.
We propose that Hampshire County Council initiate a pilot programme within our schools to explore alternative disciplinary approaches that prioritise understanding, empathy, and student well-being. Programs such as peer mediation, mentoring, and community service have shown promise in other school districts across the UK.
By signing this petition, you support the transition from traditional punitive punishments towards a more effective, positive approach to student discipline in Hampshire County schools. Let's work together to foster an educational environment where all students can thrive.
