Living in Jammu & Kashmir, I've witnessed the unsettling rise in the number of abortions - a staggering increase from 3,500 in 2020-21 to over 9,000 in recent years. Ladakh, although having lower statistics, faces a similar moral challenge. It's crucial to address this issue head-on, comprehensively advocating for the rights of the unborn, even in the most challenging situations.
Scientific evidence clearly supports that human life begins at conception. By the end of the first trimester, a fetus not only has a detectable heartbeat but also emerging brain activity. Studies suggest that a fetus can respond to stimuli and may feel pain as pregnancy progresses. These facts substantiate the argument that the ability to sustain and nurture life starts far earlier than some would like to admit.
It's important to acknowledge that while cases of rape, incest, and threats to the life of the mother are often cited in discussions about abortion, they make up a small percentage of the total number of procedures. Most abortions are performed not because of extreme reasons but due to socio-economic factors, issues related to timing, or personal preferences. We must address this disparity by providing comprehensive support systems that prioritize both mother and child, ensuring that no woman feels abortion is her sole option.
For extreme cases, we must expand our consideration and support networks, creating compassionate solutions that recognize the dignity and value of all involved. This means improving healthcare, enhancing social services, and offering psychological support, so that women are empowered to choose life.
By demanding a complete ban on abortions in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, we stand firm in our belief of protecting the right to life from its inception.
