Ban 7-OH and kratom in New York State

Ban 7-OH and kratom in New York State
The Issue
My family has experienced firsthand the devastating impact of 7-OH and kratom. These substances, which are often marketed as safe and natural alternatives, have wreaked havoc not only on my loved ones but also on countless other families I personally know across New York State. It is crucial to address this growing public health concern before more lives are adversely affected.
7-OH, or 7-hydroxy mitragynine, is a potent substance found in the kratom plant that has psychoactive effects. Despite being legal and often promoted as a harmless supplement, it can lead to addiction, mental health issues, and even overdoses. The American Kratom Association and other industry promoters have continually downplayed these risks, but research has shown the dangers present.
For instance, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, kratom can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, aggression, and even liver damage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that between July 2016 and December 2017, 91 people died with kratom in their system. These numbers are alarming and demand action from our state legislators.
Furthermore, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory in 2017 regarding the use of kratom, outlining the potential for abuse and dependence. We cannot wait until more families suffer from the addiction and harmful effects of this substance before taking decisive action.
In light of these facts, I urge New York State lawmakers to ban the distribution, sale, and consumption of 7-OH and kratom. This ban will not only protect citizens but also emphasize the state's commitment to public health and safety.
Please join me in calling for immediate legislative action to ban these dangerous substances in New York State. Sign this petition today to make our communities safer and healthier for everyone.
