Ban 1080 Byron Shire

Ban 1080 Byron Shire
The issue
We, the community, seek to end the use of 1080 (sodium mono-fluoroacetate) within Byron Shire.
1080 is banned in the US and most other countries.
In Australia, it is to target introduced species such as foxes but research has shown that 1080 poison is indiscriminate and odorless which kills any animal that ingests it, this includes possums, quolls, gliders and macropods. This has a secondary effect on any animal then consuming that dying animal. Any animal can consume it leaving this open to non-targeted animals, such as pets. Many pet dogs, including working dogs, have fallen victim to this poison. Many people including farmers are against the use of 1080 poison.
Right Now it has been distributed through many popular reserves alongside residential areas and popular beaches in Byron Shire.
*Brunswick Heads - Christmas Beach
*Ocean Shores - Brunswick heads Nature reserve.
*Possum Creek- (private property)
To name a few.
1080 is an extremely toxic and lethal water-soluble chemical,
which, on being ingested by ANY animal, pet or wildlife, causes
*Death throes lasting from 1 - 4 days of excruciating pain.
*Blocks oxygen uptake disrupting the Krebs cycle
*Causes immense suffering
*The victim undergoes extreme pain, and convulsions for hours -to days.
*It has been described as being relentlessly electrocuted for days on end.
RSPCA have deemed 1080 poison as cruel and inhumane. It should be banned, yet government departments are still using this toxic cruel poison.
We, The community of Byron Shire, object to 1080 baiting throughout the Byron Shire, including in suburban and coastal communities where the poison travels to waterways.
We call on Byron Shire Council to contact and discuss with the government bodies who ritually use 1080 every year, to take the initiative to ban the use of 1080 and seek a safer, more humane approach to removing invasive species and the protection of native species.
