The City of Bakersfield to lift its ban on feeding feral cats

The City of Bakersfield to lift its ban on feeding feral cats
The Issue
Many people who care about the wellbeing of feral cats are targeted. We are the ones who are spending our time and money to feed, take care of, trap, neuter, and return. With the feeding ban lifted, the people who care about cats and their colonies can have the power to fix them, feed them, and let them live out their lives. We need to use food to get a feral cat in a cage to get it fixed. With the city’s ban we can’t trap them since we aren’t aloud to use bait. It makes it impossible to get the population under control. The city’s ban on feral cat feeding is contributing to the overpopulation of cats since it also “unlawful to feed, or bait any wild animal...” and in that clause states that a feral cat is counted as a wild animal. The full statement is “it is unlawful for any person, purposely or knowingly, in any manor, provide access to food, feed or bait any wild animal, including, but not limited to, coyotes, deer, squirrels, feral cats, foxes, raccoons, skunks, waterfowl, birds, or beavers.” We, the cat loving people of Bakersfield, want to be able to fix feral cats, feed them, and keep them in good health. We want a way for them to live out their lives happily without starvation, and to be able to trap, neuter, AND return without facing legal consequences.
