Badminton for Seattle in Winter 2025

Badminton for Seattle in Winter 2025
The Issue
Badminton players in Seattle currently face significant challenges in finding adequate indoor playing spaces during the winter months, we urge the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department to address the ongoing shortage of badminton facilities. In the petition below, you will see the points outlining the need for Badminton Spaces at Seattle area Community Centers.
Our community research demonstrates a clear and growing demand for drop-in badminton opportunities in Seattle. Despite the sport's popularity, badminton enthusiasts are consistently marginalized by existing facility allocations that prioritize other sports during the winter season.
The drop-in community center opportunities reduce barriers to the sport as there is no cost to play unlike dedicated private badminton clubs which are expensive and located outside the city and inaccessible via public transportation. This reduction of drop-in badminton spaces not only limits recreational opportunities, but also undermines the vibrant badminton community in our area.
We respectfully request that the Winter 2025 scheduling process include:
- Dedicated drop-in hours for badminton players that are at least the same that are available in the fall.
- Equitable allocation of indoor sports facilities that reflects the interest and participation of the badminton community
The Data
Throughout 2024, we conducted a comprehensive tracking of drop-in badminton participation at the Ballard Community Center's Sunday sessions. Our findings reveal a robust and consistent interest in the sport, with an average of 34 players attending each session. The data also highlights a clear disparity between community demand and existing facility resources with only 3 available courts at this particular community center, this has created significant challenges such as prolonged wait times and limited playing opportunities for enthusiastic participants. If reductions in facilities to play in the winter continue, this funnels many participants to only a few centers thus perpetuating the issue.
The Impact
For badminton players at Seattle's community centers, badminton is more than just a sport and means of fitness—it is a vital social fabric that weaves together diverse individuals through shared passion and cultural connection. Our community consists of many players predominantly from AAPI communities, and these community centers serve as a crucial "third place" where players of all generations and backgrounds find common ground through their love of the game. By fostering these connections, badminton becomes a powerful tool for community building, mutual understanding, and social cohesion in our vibrant city.
Reducing available badminton drop-in opportunities in the winter season would not only disrupt a thriving community space but also fragment a vital social network that provides connection, cultural continuity, and intergenerational bonding. By limiting access to these shared spaces in the winter, we risk isolating community members and eroding the inclusive, collaborative environment at each community center.
Why this request now?
During the winter months, players experience a signficant reduction in places to play. The Seattle Parks and Rec schedule has not been released to the public yet, therefore we believe that this petition will provide justification and aid in the planning for the Winter season schedule before it is released with potentially fewer places to play.
By addressing these concerns, Seattle can demonstrate its commitment to supporting diverse sporting interests and providing inclusive recreational opportunities for all residents.
