We reach out to you today and speak as one united voice: the Southside parking control zone proposals must be withdrawn completely. They are unworkable, unwanted, and fundamentally incompatible with the needs and realities of our community. In this letter, we outline clearly and comprehensively the reasons why.
We expect your utmost attention. For over a month, residents, businesses and local organisations across the Southside have poured significant time and energy into understanding these proposals and assessing their consequences. Their conclusion is consistent and overwhelming: these measures would cause substantial harm to the people and places that make the Southside thrive.
This letter is supported by an exceptional share of the electorate — far beyond typical consultation engagement — demonstrating a level of democratic consensus that cannot be ignored. Together, we state plainly: these proposals risk undoing years of collective effort that have allowed the Southside to grow and flourish.
Signatures for this letter will be collected on change.org and in person due to the councils petition facilities being unavailable. Taking into account the inconsiderable time of year and below minimum consultation term we request you accept this method of signature collection without question.
We have highlighted on the following pages the failings we feel have already been established in;
- Consultation quality and democratic accountability
- practicality and Deliverability of the Scheme
We have also highlighted major concerns raised in relation to;
- Equity, inclusion and social impact
- Community & neighbourhood impact
- Environment and Transport considerations
- Economic & Business Consequences
- Reduction of spaces and accessibility
We have not reached this position lightly. Our request comes after serious consideration, careful review of the data provided, and detailed analysis of previous PCZ implementations across the city. We fully understand the Council’s objectives — but even with that in mind, we are compelled to conclude that there is no workable path forward for these proposals.
Those who live, work and breathe the Southside are united in the belief that these plans have been developed without a sufficient understanding of what makes this area such an exceptional place to live, work and visit. More critically, they fail to recognise the unique challenges we face in relation to transport connectivity and parking infrastructure. Without acknowledging these realities, the proposals cannot achieve their aims and would instead harm the very communities they are meant to support.
For now, we expect the Council to prioritise — and publicly confirm — the full and immediate cancellation of the proposed Parking Control Zones. Nothing less will suffice. This action alone would bring swift relief to the significant stress and anxiety these proposals have caused for residents, businesses and organisations across Shawlands, Strathbungo, Langside and the wider Southside.
Given the time of year, and in light of the Council’s own shortcomings in delivering a fair and accessible consultation process, this moment offers an opportunity to prevent these proposals from becoming a negative focal point within our community during the festive period. A prompt and decisive response would show respect for the residents, businesses and organisations who have engaged in good faith.
We want to work collaboratively with Glasgow City Council to support the continued development of our much-loved Southside. To do so, we need a clear commitment from the Council that these proposals will be withdrawn and that future planning will be grounded in genuine partnership, transparency and trust.
We also request — and fully expect — a complete and detailed response no later than 15th January 2026
