Petition to Restore UTA’s Black Graduation Regalia

We, the students and alumni of the University of Texas at Arlington, respectfully petition for the return of our traditional black graduation regalia. The recent shift to blue gowns has not only replaced a long-standing tradition but has also introduced a look that many find informal and unrepresentative of the significance of a university graduation. The current blue regalia has drawn comparisons to high school ceremonies, detracting from the prestige of the momentous occasion we have worked so hard to achieve.

For many students, the black regalia symbolizes academic excellence, unity, and the dignity of commencement. Without the option to choose a more formal and timeless gown, some students may even consider leaving UTA to graduate elsewhere, where their accomplishments are celebrated with more respect and tradition.

We believe UTA should bring back the black regalia again, allowing students to celebrate their achievements in a way that reflects the honor and pride of graduating from this university.
