Baby Bison Project code name Sonny

The Issue

Too many times Bison calves are euthanized in Yellowstone National park do to the death or rejection of their mother. The rejection can come from human interaction. These healthy youngsters are put to death as though their lives are valueless. This turns my stomach. These calves can be bottle fed and raised then brought to zoos or wildlife reserves or reintroduced to the park. They don't have to be killed. The recent event of the new born being helped out of the river only to be rejected by it's mother then put to death is just the most recent. It has to stop. The claim is they can not be brought from the park because some carry Brucellosis. That is an excuse. They can be placed in quarantine in rescue centers or they can be housed in a section of the park and then released. There are ways things can be done to stop this from happening. The park gets so many visitors and makes plenty of money. This can be done. The last calf killed I am calling sonny. Sonny was a new born that had it's life taken away. A park visitor saw sonny struggling in the river. This man did not know most young ones struggling in this area usually survive. He had no way of knowing this. He tried to save Sonny. His intentions were good. If he made a mistake or not, the poor calf should not have been put to death. This can't continue. If those in charge do not want to do the options I listed, then they can at the very least post an information sign by the area explaining this happens. They could post signs in the area of the Lamar river and the Soda creek confluence. They could also post signs about the calves being touched by humans will lead to herd rejection. This would have saved Sonny and others like the one placed in a car in 2016. If enough people got together, their voices would be heard. It doesn't matter how often this happens. One more is too much. I love Yellowstone National Park so this was a tough stand to take. I don't want anymore of these babies killed. There has to be a way to save these babies. It does not matter how often it happens or why the babies are left on their own, they should not be killed. I know having them bottle fed and looked after is to much to hope for but these signs would have saved Sonny and may have saved the other baby. Photo is shared.
