Earlier this week the AUSD School Board specifically Gabriela Arellanes, Sabrina Bow, Xilonin Cruz-Gonzalez, Adrian Greer, and Yolanda Rodriguez-Peña voted to stop the use of the Aztec as Azusa High Schools mascot. After 66 years of honoring and taking pride in the Aztec the decision was made to no longer allow it, a decision that comes with a 2 million dollar price tag to rebrand the high school. AUSD is already losing money and having to close schools but agreed to this costly change. With budget cuts the first things to go will be classes like chicano or latino studies, arts programs, or sports. Instead of hurting our students we must push the district to continue honoring the Aztec and educate us on how do it the right way. This money can be used to allow more education on the history of Aztecs. REMEMBER we vote for our school board! They are suppose to represent the community and listen to our thoughts! We must demand that they hear us! Three of the members terms are over in 2022 and this could be a major determining factor for if we plan to vote them back into office or not!
