Denise Fishstein started this petition to Arizona Clemency Board

My son “Dustin Palen” is serving a prison term of 81/2 years at Lewis State Prison Complex in Buckeye, AZ.  He is a “NONVIOLENT OFFENDER” incarcerated for drug possession and theft to support his habit. Dustin has been a drug addict since he was 17 and now at 41 he has been clean and sober for over 5 years. He originally entered prison (the first time) in 2002 as a meth addict but at his release in 2011 heroine was his drug of choice. Unfortunately this abuse led to his current incarceration, HOWEVER, in 2014 (a year before his sentence was to begin) he entered rehab for 90 days and after that he transferred to a sober living house where he spent the next 9 months. Little did he know that this would be one of the most impactful experiences that he would ever know. It would also lead him to live an entirely new way of life.  Sober, happy, cleared headed and his family now allowing him back in their lives. During that time he wore an ankle monitor with no infractions and continued to stay clean and sober. To this day he has sustained his sobriety and as of June 2019 he received his “5 year AA/NA chip” Besides holding onto his “Sobriety in Prison” his other “Major Accomplishment” is completing his Associates Degree in “Applied Science in Addiction and Substance Use Disorder.” He is now working towards his bachelors and works assisting the teacher in the prisons educational department. This allows him to counsel/tutor other inmates that are completing their GED. During this incarceration he has had countless drug tests all of which have been “Negative” and his disciplinary record is in “Excellent” standing with “Zero Tickets”. It’s a far cry from the first time he was in prison which consisted of countless tickets and one failed drug test after another. I’m a firm believer in being held accountable for your actions but with Dustin’s accomplishments I find it difficult to justify the taxpayers paying almost $40,000 a year to keep him in the system. I truly believe he is a perfect candidate for early release and this would enable him to be a positive influence to others struggling with addiction. Besides family, he has an unbelievable support system from the AA community and half his visitations list consists of his AA members/sponsor who faithfully visit every single month. Even the “judge” at my sons sentencing was moved to see the entire gallery filled with over 70 “AA members” The judge stated that he has never seen anything like it before in his courtroom. His amazement was at the fact that the “offender” (Dustin) had such an overwhelming amount of supporters. It’s a miracle and a blessing that sobriety is the road that Dustin chose to follow. If my son is granted clemency he will be released approximately a year earlier than his original sentence.  It has been a long road of addiction but his continuous sobriety, I believe, has earned him a second chance to become a productive member of society. The work he could do, the time he would give, the addicts he could help and the things he has to offer are invaluable. It’s amazing when he speaks people really listen and benefit from his knowledge. He has a special quality that allows him to reach people that might otherwise be unreachable. This is a gift that is greatly needed in the world of addiction. Your support in signing this petition would go a long way in achieving our goal of clemency for my son, Dustin Palen.
