The CBC today released a story about how Coca-cola has poured millions into funding research that suggests exercise, not diet, is the best way to fight obesity. The story also mentions a study done by Dr. Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez of the department of preventive medicine and public health at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. He and his colleagues found that 83 per cent of scientists funded by industry could find no relationship between obesity and soft drink consumption. But 83 per cent of independent researchers did. "They want to send a smoke screen on the real fact that they are doing harm with products," Martinez-Gonalez said. The story goes on to state that the same pernicious confusion created by industry-funded researchers was created by the tobacco companies in the 80's. In 1999, the CBC' Fifth Estate raised the same alarm about telecom companies controlling research into the bio-effects of wireless technology (“Cone of Silence," Feb 9, 1999). We need to change this vicious cycle and protect people first.
