The Issue

As someone with a deep passion for animal welfare and a professional qualification in animal care, it breaks my heart to see pets being walked in scorching temperatures.

I’m aware it is also well-meaning owners that are unaware of this issue.

Having worked intimately in this field, I have witnessed firsthand the distress and potential harm that extreme heat can inflict upon our beloved companions.

Animals, particularly dogs, are extremely vulnerable in hot weather conditions, as they cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently as humans can. The rising temperatures during the summer months in Ireland are a growing concern, and we need to adapt our laws to reflect this urgent issue.

During hotter days, pavement temperatures can skyrocket, reaching levels that can cause severe burns to a pet's paws within minutes.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) highlights that when the air temperature is 25°C, the asphalt temperature can exceed an agonizing 50°C. This is detrimental not only to their health but can lead to immediate suffering, heatstroke, and even death.

The awareness could take inspiration from existing regulations in jurisdictions where it's illegal to leave pets in hot cars.

Enforcing signs and alerts on walking pets during peak heat periods is a simple yet effective step that prioritizes the health and welfare of animals. Awareness campaigns can be initiated, educating citizens about safe temperatures for pet activities and establishing a hot-weather alert system to inform pet owners when conditions are unsafe.

The implementation of fines for violators would further ensure adherence to the law, acting as a deterrent against negligence. We urge lawmakers to take swift action to safeguard our pets from unbearable heat. By doing so, we ensure that our commitment to animal welfare is as unwavering as the love we receive from our pets.

Please lend your support by signing this petition to instigate necessary legal changes for the protection and well-being of animals in Ireland.
