Last year, I had the unforgettable experience of seeing Level 42 live for the first time. The energy, musical expertise, and unique style, especially Mark King’s legendary slap bass technique, left a lasting impression on me. Level 42, formed in 1980 on the Isle of Wight, has had a profound impact on the music industry. With over 30 million records sold worldwide and chart-topping hits like "Lessons in Love" and "Something About You", their fusion of pop, rock, and jazz-funk has continually pushed musical boundaries. Despite an illustrious career spanning over four decades, they have yet to be recognized on the Camden Walk of Fame, a deserving platform for such influential artists.
In 1979 a young Mark King wanted to be a drummer but felt Phil Gould was a more accomplished drummer. He lied to gain employment in Macari's stating that he could play bass. It was in Macari's where he watched American musicians demoing instruments. He mirrored their techniques & pioneered the legendary slap bass that's defined the unique sound of Level 42 through the decades. While Macari's was located in the west end shopping district, the business rates paid went to the London borough of Camden. This means the signature sound of Level 42 was born in Camden.
Recognising Level 42 with a stone on the Camden Walk of Fame would not only honor their past achievements but also inspire future generations to explore and appreciate their genre-defying sound. The Camden Walk of Fame celebrates musical diversity and excellence, and Level 42 undeniably exemplifies these values.
