The Issue

On January 5th, 2022, our lives were shattered when our daughter Alice, a dedicated paramedic, tragically lost her life due to the careless driving of her crewmate, Mr Edward Riding. Despite pleading Guilty to a charge of ‘Death by Careless Driving’ in a Criminal Court, and also being specifically named by the Coroner in their inquest verdict, Mr Riding was only 'Suspended' for a year by the Professional Body, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), rather than being permanently 'struck-off'. Shockingly, despite the gravity of his offence, he will shortly be readmitted to the Register and be permitted to both Practice and also drive emergency vehicles again.  Allowing someone whose conduct has violated the sanctity of those standards to re-join the professional body without facing permanent consequences not only undermines public trust but also tarnishes the honour of dedicated professionals like Alice, who fulfil their duties with utmost care and commitment.

This tragedy exposes a critical and alarming gap in our current system and we urge the HCPC and similar bodies to immediately introduce a national rule mandating the automatic and permanent striking off of emergency drivers and workers from the professional register if found guilty of causing death while on duty. This policy change, which demonstrates decisive action and zero tolerance, will serve as both a deterrent and a means of ensuring public and professional safety. It will underline the fact that such severe breaches of duty cannot and will not be tolerated.

We urge policy makers, the HCPC, and regulatory bodies to adopt this critical measure. Alice's death should not be in vain. Let's make sure no other family has to face the heart-wrenching loss we have endured due to a system that falls short of protecting the very individuals it serves. Please sign this petition and support a change that will ensure justice and safety for all.
