Authorize SPeD Certifications for Retired Military

Authorize SPeD Certifications for Retired Military
The Issue
Certifications are more than just a piece of paper; they symbolize professional growth, expertise, and dedication in a career. For many in the military, the Security Professional Education (SPeD) certifications represent a pinnacle of achievement. Yet, there is a glaring discrepancy for retired military personnel who, regardless of their previous roles, are ineligible to obtain these vital credentials.
I recently faced this injustice firsthand. Upon my retirement from a dedicated military career, I was poised to take the SPeD certification test. It was a testament to years of hard work, passion, and commitment to the security field. Unfortunately, my test, scheduled just a week after my retirement, was abruptly canceled due to my newly retired status. This arbitrary restriction denies countless veterans a fair chance to further their careers in the security industry, leaving them at a significant disadvantage.
Retired military personnel bring invaluable skills, experiences, and perspectives to the security enterprise sector. Whether they transition into roles as Department of Defense personnel, federal employees, or contractors, their contributions are profound. It is imperative to authorize SPeD certifications for them, thereby acknowledging their vital past roles as well as facilitating their continued professional development.
Statistics demonstrate that veterans who pursue certifications in their post-military careers have higher employment rates and earn competitive salaries compared to their non-certified peers. By allowing retired military personnel to obtain SPeD certifications, we not only support their personal career growth but also enhance the quality and expertise within the Defense Department's security workforce.
The solution is clear: Extend the authorization of SPeD certifications to retired military personnel, regardless of whether they are Department of Defense personnel performing security enterprise functions, federal employees, or contractors assigned to security positions supporting the DOD. This adjustment would bridge the current gap and ensure equal opportunities for all individuals who have dedicated their lives to our nation’s defense.
This issue deserves immediate attention, not just for the personal careers affected but for the broader implications it holds for national security and workforce quality. Please sign this petition to support our veterans in obtaining the recognition and opportunities they rightly deserve.
