Australian Vegan Teacher Oscar Jenkins' Release/Prison Swap from Russian POW Gulag Ukraine

The issue

Australian citizen, Oscar Jenkins, a teacher and committed vegan originally from Victoria, has been sentenced to 13 years in a Russian prison. His situation is extremely serious and requires urgent diplomatic attention.

Oscar travelled to Ukraine because he believed strongly in protecting people who were being treated harshly. Whatever views one may hold about the conflict, Oscar acted out of a sincere commitment to supporting those he felt were vulnerable and in a position of weakness relative to the aggressor, and he now deserves the full assistance of his government.

Political prisoner swaps and negotiated releases are well-established tools in international diplomacy. Other nations have successfully secured the return of their citizens through sustained and strategic engagement. Australia should pursue every available option.

We are calling on the Australian Government to:

Prioritise Oscar’s case at the highest diplomatic levels.
Raise his situation consistently with both Ukraine and Russia.
Explore all lawful avenues, including humanitarian negotiations and potential prisoner exchanges.
Ensure Oscar’s welfare is monitored and that he is not forgotten.

This is not only about one individual. It is about how Australia protects its citizens abroad, particularly in times of war and political instability. Oscar has been imprisoned long enough.

Please sign this petition urging Prime Minister Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong to work decisively to bring Oscar home through a prisoner swap or any other means.

Your signature can help make a real difference.
