I'm a 42 year old who has been addicted to tobacco for 35 years (when you could purchase a packet of cigarettes for on average of $2:15. I am currently on a disability support pension receiving minimal payments to live on but the taxes on a product that the government allowed me to become addicted to has now nearly crippled my financial stability. I am currently paying just over $50 for a packet of Peter Jackson 30s which is a extraordinary 2400 percent increase. I'm not a very educated person but I believe this is an injustice to anyone who has been smoking for 20-30 year's, and if they need to impose a tax to discourage people from smoking it should be applied by age brackets to stop the younger generation. Or put a year cut off for legalised purchase for people born after 2000 for example. it is unfair that people who have been smoking for so many years to have to pay the extortion pricing that the government is currently charging. I am putting out a petition for myself and as many other people who have been addicted to tobacco and have already paid enough in taxes to build a hospital or two (estimated example of taxes paid only) to help me cry out and change this crippling price extortion. It is unfair and needs to be addressed. Plus restitution needs to be made for past pricing.
