The issue

I’m a survivor of female genital mutilation. When I was a little girl, I was held down and my clitoris and labia were mutilated with a rusty knife. Now I am fighting for all the little girls in danger, and the many others like me who have survived this brutal torture.

There are tens of thousands of other women like me in Australia – who’ve been through the hell of this outdated, scary practice.

But right now, the  surgery that could help us regain our sexual function isn’t available in Australia, leaving survivors without help.

This surgery known as clitoral restoration and pioneered overseas could finally give us some sexual function back – and for survivors like me, it’s given us hope. I’m desperately pleading for the Australian Medical Association to approve and train a surgeon in this new surgery.

We know it’s not going to give us back all that was taken away, but it might just help us regain something.

Female genital mutilation is a horrific crime. It’s illegal in Australia, yet it’s still happening. I remember being told it was ‘for my own good’ – but it left me trying to recover my whole life.

That’s why I’m pleading with the President of the Australian Medical Association, Brian Owler to help the survivors of this violent crime and allow them access to this life-changing surgery.

Thank you,
Khadija
