Justice for Bulla horses

The issue

A maximum 2 year jail sentence is not enough for the aggravated cruelty and death of any animal, if you agree please sign! Several other states have a longer jail term for aggravated cruelty, lets add Victoria to that list! Click on this link to see the horrifying pictures: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3522350/Bruce-Akers-charged-animal-cruelty-Bulla-dead-horses.html "Bruce Akers is the 'horse trainer' believed to be responsible for the deaths of 22 horses on a property in Bulla. Bruce Akers, 63, was arrested on Sunday the 3rd of April and charged on Monday evening with 92 animal cruelty offences after police made a grim discovery at his Bulla farm. Police were responding to complaints from Akers’ neighbours who said a foul smell was coming from his property. He also allegedly threatened to return to the farm after his arrest to kill the horses that miraculously survived. Sergeant Jim Currell told Broadmeadows Magistrates Court the surviving horses were so badly malnourished they had a body scale of zero, which is the lowest possible scale before a horse dies. The RSPCA has taken the remaining horses to be rehabilitated. Racing Victoria helped with the relocation of the horses and more than 30 people have contacted the RSPCA with offers to take the animals." - Courtesy of AAP. Currently The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 punishments (POCTAA) for anyone causing pain or even death to an animal by leaving the animal without water, food and shade is: a) Where the animal is caused or likely to be caused unreasonable pain and suffering = 12 months imprisonment up to $37,310 in fines and a possible ten year/lifetime ban from being allowed to own or be in charge of an animal. b) Causing death or serious disablement as a result = two years imprisonment, up to $74,620 in fines and a possible ten year/lifetime ban from being allowed to own or be in charge of an animal. A maximum 2 year jail sentence, a maximum of a $74k fine and a lifetime animal ban is not enough of a punishment when you are responsible for the death of 23 horses who suffered a slow death of starvation and who's bodies were left to rot where they fell. A further 22 horses had to be rescued by the RSPCA and these horses were starving and close to death also. Let the Australian Government know 2 years is not enough for each of these poor horses. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 needs to be reformed to reflect Australian attitudes towards animal cruelty in 2016. Sign and share now. Thank you
