Do you want to force our Australian children to undergo a painful, yet pointless assessment? NAPLAN is the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy; it is currently conducted across Australia and our vision is to bring forward the abolishment of NAPLAN for the goodwill of our children. This useless assessment forces students to use up weeks of their learning time to study for the fruitless test and fills our students with stress and anxiety while dragging the self-esteem of our children to the floor when they aren’t in a certain level. Although NAPLAN allows schools and students to test themselves against the national average, it has revealed itself to be an inaccurate and inefficient way to measure intelligence across Australia. Therefore, the abolishment of the national assessment will provide the opportunity of a better alternative for our students, rather than waste weeks of their time without benefitting them whatsoever.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, currently uses up weeks of a student’s learning time within school to prepare; taking 3 days to complete the test on paper and 9 days electronically. The time it steals from our children’s education is enormous, with the assessment conducted every 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th grade. The wasted time studying for the fruitless test has only led to negative results, with “depression, sleep deprivation, lack of balance and alienation of their lives” (K, 2018) occurring with too much time spent studying. This may be worth the risk while studying for your future career, however, is it worth the risk to only benefit the unending greed of schools and people of government? The answer is clear. We must get rid of NAPLAN to give our future students more time to learn, rather than to fuel the greed of others and bring awareness to the stress the test also produces.

Stress and anxiety are increasingly relevant before exams, and the levels of anxiety that has been recorded with upcoming NAPLAN are shocking. Worryingly, students are experiencing terrible signs of stress, including headaches, stomach aches and insomnia. A survey conducted by The Conversation, explained that “90% of teachers reported that students felt stressed before taking the test… a majority of respondents suggested that it should be scrapped.” It is, without a doubt, evident that the nation assessment is simply pouring stress into our students and destroying their self-esteem.

The self-confidence of our students is a vital part of their ability to learn and challenge themselves throughout life. However, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, is breaking their spirits. These students get their results back in the form of a ‘band’ which are levels of achievement compared to the national average. When a student narrowly misses a higher band, or are below their friend’s band, the self-esteem of the child crumbles into dust. “Ninety per cent believed lower than expected NAPLAN results would mean that a school would have trouble attracting and retaining students.” This evidence clearly shows that a student’s NAPLAN capability can affect the school, which makes the school train these kids harder and places more pressure for the useless test.

To summarise, NAPLAN pries weeks away from our children’s education, produces higher levels of stress and anxiety and brutally massacres the self-esteem of our students; forcing pressure on them to achieve high marks if they want their school to succeed. World-renowned School Education Minister, Peter Garrett, and The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority expertly agree that “NAPLAN tests are not tests students can 'prepare' for. Therefore, there is no reason that the teaching of other subjects should suffer or that students should feel stressed.” We, the good citizens of Australia, have the power to take away the suffering of our students and restore peace to our schools. The abolishment of NAPLAN will call for either regular learning periods in replacement or a healthier alternative, such as decreased study periods and extension to other academic subjects, such as music or art. We will change our children’s lives for the better. We must start now, by signing this petition.
